Microsoft Dynamics AX2012R3 Warehouse Management Inbound Logistics

Microsoft Dynamics AX2012R3 Warehouse Management Inbound Logistics

This blog post will cover the Microsoft Dynamics AX2012R3 Warehouse Management module, my focus will be on Inbound logistics. The process will be triggered by the Purchase order created by a Procurement specialist or a Merchandiser.
In order to use the Inbound logistics, we need to perform a couple of Prerequisite setups for Warehouse management module
Setup and configuration list
  • Storage dimension group
  • Tracking dimension group(Optional)
  • Produce dimension group(Optional)
  • Setup a warehouse
  • Setup reservation hierarchy
  • Setup item master
  • location type
  • Location format
  • Location profiles
  • Location setup visit
Storage dimension group
  • In storage dimension group we need to select three things
    • Use warehouse management process(mark check)
    • Inventory status (Available/Not available)
    • License plate: The license plate inventory dimension is designed to allow you to track and move material in the warehouse by license plate numbers, typically applied to pallets. In this way, you can move a pallet that may contain many boxes of the same or different items in one transaction.  The license plate dimension can also be used to generate labels.
  • Note: The warehouse management module requires that the following locations will be license plate controlled:
      • Receiving Dock
      • Shipping Dock
      • Mobile Device User
We can set up these three locations as license plate controlled and leave the rest of the locations as nonlicensed plate controlled, this will simplify the warehouse operations.
Warehouse Master
In warehouse master form, make sure to mark the check for "use warehouse management processes"
Locations
In locations master form, create warehouse locations
  • Enter the location name
  • Select Location profile ID
  • Select zone
Reservation hierarchy
"The reservation hierarchy is based on the storage and tracking dimensions of items, such as inventory status and license plate."
Note: The dimensions Site, Warehouse, Inventory status, Location, and License plate are all required levels in a reservation hierarchy. Additional dimensions, such as the Batch number and Serial number, only need to be included if they are used in the associated tracking dimension group.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Inventory > Reservation hierarchy
Setup reservation hierarchy for the site, warehouse, inventory status, location and license plate
Create Item
Once prerequisite setups are completed, we can create an item "Mars"

Setup Unit Sequence Group
The unit sequence group defines the sequence of units that can be used in warehouse operations. The sequence determines the order of units in which warehouse work is generated and it is applied when work is created for quantities on a purchase order line or transfer order line. The unit sequence group should include units of measure that range from the smallest to the largest unit and can be used for the product in warehouse operations.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse setup > Unit sequence groups.
Location types: Create warehouse location types bay door, bulk, Inbound, Outbound etc
Bay door: A loading dock or bay door is an area of a warehouse where goods vehicles are loaded and unloaded.
Location Formats: Location formats form to create a format for the ID that is used to identify a specific warehouse location. A location format can contain multiple segments.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse setup > Location formats
Location Profiles: The settings which specify whether a particular warehouse location is license plate controlled, whether it can be cycle counted and whether it allows for mixing of inventory batches.
Warehouse Zones: A defined area in a warehouse to which you allocate specific inventory items.
Work templates: A Work template is used to create and process warehouse work at various stages in the warehouse management process. A valid work template should be specified in pairs of pick and put. You can create a Work template for the following types of warehouse-related activities:
  • Inbound transactions.
  • Picking of inventory items.
  • Production tasks such as picking or putting of raw materials.
  • Inventory transfers.
  • Movement of inventory items between locations.
  • Replenishment of locations.
Location Directives: This topic explains how to create location directives. Location directives are user-defined rules that help identify pick and put locations for inventory movement. For example, in a sales order transaction, a location directive determines where the items will be picked and where the picked items will be put.
You can use location directives to do the following:
  • Put away incoming items.
  • Pick and stage items for outbound transactions.
  • Pick and put raw materials for production.
  • Replenish locations.
Work Users: In order to use the "Mobile Device" for warehouse users, define User ID for the warehouse in Work users form also set the password for the users.
Mobile Device Menus: Menu items like purchase receive, sales pick, Driver check-in, Driver check out is the list of items which will be defined in the mobile device menu. Warehouse workers will select the specified menu in order to perform their warehouse operations.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Mobile device > Mobile device menu items.
Mobile Device Menus Items: Menu items are the list of items which warehouse workers will be used to perform their warehouse operations. Once menu items defined, they will be displayed in the mobile device menu.
Create Purchase Order: After completing all the pre requisite setups for warehouse management, mobile device, and item. Create a purchase order for item "Mars".
Path: Procurement and sourcing> Common> Purchase orders> all purchase order
  • Create new purchase order
  • Select vendor, site, and warehouse

Before posting the product receipt, the status of purchase order is "Registered"
Once product receipt posted, the status of purchase order is "Received"
Questions and Answers
1- Can we enable the Microsoft Dynamics AX2012 R3 Mobile Device for Advanced warehouse management available in AX2012R2?
Ans: The answer is "No". Mobile Device will only work for new "Warehouse Management" module.
2- Is License plate is always mandatory for warehouse management?
Ans: License plate is always mandatory when we have storage dimension group enabled in warehouse management. It's possible for License plate the check box Blank receipt allowed and another check box Blank issue allowed is enabled and cannot be changed. So, in fact, it should be possible to leave it empty. The setting to have this License plate mandatory or not is on the Location profiles. We can also disable the check box 'Use license plate tracking'. Then it should be possible to do a transaction without the license plate. We can enable or disable the settings on location profiles to make LP mandatory or not, just disable the tick box 'Use license plate tracking'. Once it's disabled it is possible to do the transactions without the license plate.
